Central Contact Point for Cross-border Family Conflicts

ZAnK - Zentrale Anlaufstelle für grenzüberschreitende Kindschaftskonflikte

Functions

Child welfare oriented. Neutral. Free of charge.

Under these premises

  • we provide counseling and information about ways and possibilities of dealing with a conflict,
  • we refer enquirers to the relevant agencies
  • and – if possible and necessary – we establish contact with the competent agencies in the other country.

Child welfare oriented

The ones who suffer most in a conflict are the children. In order to avoid that children become the subject matter of dispute between their parents, it is of utmost importance to put the rights and interests of the child into the centre of attention. Children have a right to contact with both parents. In order to make this happen, counseling includes the need to try to de-escalate the conflict.

Usually children do want to have contact with both parents. But sometimes they don’t have a chance. As a result, fear of loss as well as loyalty conflicts may place a heavy burden on children for years to come, even into their adulthood. Therefore, efforts to establish contact with both parents and to de-escalate the conflict are an integral component of the counselling we provide. The main focus of our work is on the welfare of children.

Neutral

We neither represent the interests of one of the parents, nor do we act as an “extension" of local authorities and courts. We do not perform the function of a solicitor and will therefore not act as an advocate for any of the two parties. We do not condemn anyone for what he/she did or wants to do. We are neutral and provide counseling in this manner - we provide information and suggest what steps can be taken.

Free of charge

For telephone counseling – no matter if it consists of one phone conversation or several ones – we do not charge any fee. Only your telephone charges are incurred.

This does not apply, however, when the service of International Social Service (ISD) is requested in order to take up contact in another country and – in the context of administrative or court proceedings – to obtain or to forward information. In this case, please visit our website: www.iss-ger.de to view the Guidelines on Collaboration with ISS German Branch and information about the fees. www.iss-ger.de
